FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers are sending another player to the highest level of Division I Baseball as righthander Ben Peterson has signed with the University of North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels in 2023.
Peterson has pitched in four games for the Bucs this season, going 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 10 2/3 innings pitched.
Peterson transferred to FSW from Appalachian State where he toed the rubber 11 times for the Mountaineers as a freshman in 2021. He was racked up 16 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings pitched, posting his best outing of the season in his final time on the mound, going three scoreless innings in a win over Texas State.
Peterson will join a Tar Heel program deep in tradition, reaching the NCAA Tournament 9 of the past 10 years and advancing to the College World Series three times during that stretch. This season North Carolina is off to a 15-2 start, and sits at #10 in the latest RPI rankings.
Peterson and the Bucs are 20-11 on the season and ranked 16th in the latest NJCAA National Rankings. FSW will resume to Suncoast Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Bradenton to take on State College of Florida in the first of a three game set between the two.
Peterson is the seventh Division I and ninth overall signee for the Bucs this season, joining Magnus Ellerts (Florida), Jose Izarra (Dallas Baptist), Grant Besser (Rutgers), Riley Skeen (South Florida), Matthew Corpas (Florida International), Nicholas Regalado (FGCU), Frank Ellisalt (Nova Southeastern), and Kalvin Alexander (Georgia Southwestern).
