DENVER, Colo.- After a season dominating the end of games for the Suncoast Conference Champion Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers, closer Antonio Knowles was selected in the 13th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft by the reigning World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday afternoon.
Knowles was FSW's first 1st Team All-American in program history this season, leading the NJCAA with 13 saves while notching a microscopic 1.35 ERA which was second best in the country for hurlers who pitched 40 innings of more. Even more impressive though, was his 72 to 5 strikeout to walk ratio on the season, far and away the best mark in the NJCAA ranks in 2021. That still wasn't the end of his superlatives though, as his 16.20 strikeouts per nine was tops among NJCAA hurlers that pitched at least 35 innings this year. Knowles didn't allow a single earned run this year until his 12th appearance and 20th inning pitched of the season, striking out 33 and walking just 3 during that stretch.
Tuesday marks the second time in his career that Knowles has been drafted by a Major League Baseball team after going in the 27th round to the Texas Rangers out of high school.
With Knowles' name called by the Dodgers, FSW has now had four players from their 2021 squad selected in the draft as he joins Carlos Rodriguez (6th-Brewers), Alex Ayala (9th- Rays), and Marc Davis (11th- Nationals). Also of note, was 2019 FSW ace Mitch Myers who was nabbed in the 12th round by Oakland Athletics after transferring to the University of Pittsburgh for the past two seasons.
