DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Ivy Brown led a dominating effort on the inside for the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers Saturday afternoon, going for 19 points and 17 rebounds in a 72-53 FSW win over the Daytona State Falcons to finish a perfect 3-0 week of Citrus Conference play.
The Bucs wasted little time in jumping on Daytona early on, scoring the first seven points of the ballgame and then taking a 13-2 lead midway through the first on a putback from Ivy Brown and a jumper from Sarah Owona. From there FSW went as cold as the Winter breeze, going without a field goal for the final 4:23 of the quarter as the Falcons worked their way back into the game, cutting the Bucs lead to just two by the end of the quarter at 18-16.
Asiana Britt picked off a pass and found Owona for two to break the dry spell for the Bucs early in the second, but it wasn't until the 5:09 mark that the Bucs found the bucket again as Daytona roared all the way back to tie the game at 21 midway through the quarter. The Bucs pushed back in front and slowly padded their lead. A Georgi Buzzetti jumper cushioned the lead back to nine at 32-23 and another offensive rebound and second chance bucket from Brown gave the Bucs a double digit lead at the break 36-25.
Brown continued to have her way on the inside against the Falcons as the second half began, beefing the Bucs lead up to 45-28 midway through the third. Owona nailed a three to give the Bucs their first 20 point lead of the game with 3:30 to go in the third and at the end of the period it was all FSW leading 54-37.
Britt took over the fourth quarter for the Bucs, scoring the first 10 points of the period for the Purple and Aqua to keep them up big, 64-46 with 5:48 to go. Daytona got back to within 14 with just over 3:00 to go, but they would never get to within striking distance of the Bucs as FSW got a late basket from Elina Briede and dribbled out a 72-53 win at the final horn.
Brown and Buzzetti led a dominating effort for the Bucs in the paint in the victory. Brown finished with 19 points and a career high 17 rebounds for FSW while Buzzetti dialed up a double-double of her own with 10 points and 13 boards. All five FSW starters scored in double figures with Owona finishing second on the team behind Brown with 15 to go along with her 8 rebounds.
FSW wins their fifth straight to move to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in Citrus Conference play where they lead the league after one week of action. Daytona loses their fourth straight to fall to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Bucs will step out of conference play Wednesday with a road trip to Jacksonville to take on FSCJ before a furious finish to the first half with three Citrus Conference games in five days starting on Saturday in Suncoast Arena when they take on Santa Fe at 2 PM.
