Bucs Slugger Named NJCAA National Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- After earning FCSAA Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, Florida SouthWestern State sophomore slugger Derek Williams was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week Wednesday for his efforts last week in four FSW contests.

Williams was on fire for the Bucs last week, driving in 14 runs while hitting .625 and slugging 1.313 while putting together an OPS of 1.960 in four games.  He has two extra base hits in three of the four contests and drove in multiple runs in all four games.  Tuesday in a win over St. Petersburg, Williams was 3-4, missing the cycle by just a triple while driving in five in an FSW win.  Wednesday he ripped a pair of doubles and drove in five more against A3 Academy.  Over the weekend his hot streak continued as he was 3-4 with two more doubles and two RBIs in a Bucs win over Polk State and Saturday he had his fourth straight multi-hit game while crushing his seventh homer of the year against Seminole State.

Williams is just the second Buc in program history to earn NJCAA National Player of the Week honors, joining Drake Dobyanski who won the award in April of 2019.

Bucs fans will have three shots to see Williams live and in action this weekend as FSW hosts Polk State Friday at 2:00 at Buccaneers Park on campus and is back home on Saturday for a pair when they host Seminole State in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
