ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers turned up the screws on the defensive end Saturday afternoon in St. Petersburg, tying a program record for least points allowed in a conference game as they blew past the St. Petersburg Titans 67-33 in Citrus Conference action to improve to 5-2 in league play on the season.
It was slow going for both sides early on as FSW led just 4-2 four minutes into the contest. A 6-0 run by the Bucs midway through the quarter, capped by a slashing drive through the lane from Roksana Sajdak, put FSW up 12-4 with under 2:00 to go in the quarter. St. Pete closed the quarter on a 5-2 burst to cut the Bucs lead to 14-9 at the end of 10 minutes of action.
The Bucs made a push early in the second to open things up as Addison Potts banked home a three to make it 23-11 FSW before an old fashioned three point play from Georgi Buzzetti stretched the lead to 30-13 with 3:19 to go. The Bucs pushed the lead to 20 before the half, taking a 36-16 advantage into the break.
The Bucs carried their momentum right over into the second half, scoring 9 of the first 11 points out of the break to blow the lead wide open to 45-17 with 7:00 to go in the third. At the end of three it was all Purple and Aqua as the Bucs led the Titans 52-23.
The Bucs continued to pour it on as the fourth quarter began, stretching their lead past 30 before a late bucket from Federica Lagana finished off a 67-33 win for FSW.
Kiana Wilson, Lisa Le Roy, and Makenna Shaffer scored 12 points a piece for the Bucs in the win to lead the offense while Lagana picked off 9 steals for FSW to tie a program single game record. The 33 points allowed by the Bucs tied another program record for least points given up in a conference game.
FSW improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in Citrus Conference play with the win while St. Petersburg's struggles continue as the Titans fall to 3-14 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
The Bucs three game road trip continues Tuesday when they make the long trip to Gainesville to take on Santa Fe in a 5:00 PM tip.
