Gutsy Effort Earns Wegielnik FCSAA Pitcher of the Week Honors

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Robert Wegielnik came up huge when the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers needed him most last week.  His efforts earned him FCSAA Pitcher of the Week honors as announced by the state office on Tuesday.

Wegielnik was a workhorse for the Bucs last week, pitching three times in five FSW ballgames.  Tuesday he came out of the Bucs bullpen to close out a win, going 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit to lead FSW over Hillsborough 7-2.  One day later he was called upon in a tight spot, inducing a double play with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate in the 9th inning to earn a save and finish the Bucs sweep of Hillsborough.  Just two days later, with the Bucs down a starter at the last minute, he took the ball again in an emergency start against South Florida State, spinning six shutout innings, striking out six to earn the win in FSW's 5-1 win over the Panthers.  On the week he  threw 9 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a .097 opponents batting average, earning a win and a save in the process.

On the season Wegielnik has thrown in 11 games, posting a 2-0 record with two saves while notching a 2.93 ERA in 30 2/3 innings pitched.

Wegielnik is the first FSW pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Week honors since Mitch Myers in April of 2019.

With his state honor, Wegielnik will now be automatically entered as a candidate for the NJCAA National Pitcher of the Week announced later this week.

Wegielnik and the Bucs are 24-8 on the year and ranked 17th in the latest NJCAA National Rankings.  The Bucs will be back in action Wednesday at City of Palms Park when they host St. Petersburg to start a three game series between the two.
