Bucs' Alcantara Named FCSAA Player of the Week

TALLAHASSEE, Fla- After leading the top ranked Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers to a trio of key conference wins last week, sophomore hitter Elissa Alcantara has been named the FCSAA Player of the Week, the fifth different Buc to bring home a weekly honor from the state this season.

Alcantara wasted no time in making her presence known last week, drawing just her fourth start of the season Tuesday against #5 Miami Dade and going off for 11 kills and just one error on 29 swings as the Bucs swept the Sharks 3-0 on the road in Miami.  She backed that up on Thursday with another big performance, this time hammering down 13 kills on 21 swings, good for a .476 hitting percentage as the Bucs swept Indian River 3-0 in Suncoast Arena.  She saved her best performance of the week for last though, and when the Bucs needed it the most, as she finished off a season high 19 kills and was also in on 7 blocks as FSW won a highly contested 3-1 battle on the road at Daytona State on Saturday. On the week the sophomore averaged 4.30 kills and 1.20 blocks per set while hitting .380 on the pin.

Alcantara was joined on the week six Player of the Week list by teammate Deborah Ribeiro who was named the state's Defensive Player of the Week.

Alcantara and the Bucs will be back in action on Tuesday in Suncoast Credit Union Arena when they host the Eastern Florida State Titans in a 6 PM first serve.
