League High Five Bucs Named All-Suncoast Conference

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- With Suncoast Conference action in the rearview mirror and the postseason ahead of them, a league high five Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers were honored with All-Conference selections on Wednesday as Julia de Sa and Anna Leweling were named 1st Team All-Conference picks, while Marina Alonso, Amanda Mendes, and Viktoria Ivanova were tabbed 2nd Team All-Conference choices.

The Bucs had two unanimous 1st Team All-Conference selections in freshmen outside hitters Julia de Sa and Anna Leweling.

De Sa finished third among Suncoast Conference hitters in conference play, averaging 3.38 kills per set for the Bucs.  She came up big down the stretch for FSW, recording 12 or more kills in each of the Bucs final four conference tilts, averaging over 4.00 kills per set during that stretch.

Leweling was right behind de Sa, putting up 3.04 kills per set in conference action which ranked fourth among Suncoast hitters.  Her .317 hitting percentage in conference play also put her among the league leaders, ranking third at the outside position.  Her conference highlights included averaging a double-double with 25 kills and 21 digs in back to back contests against top 15 foes in St. Petersburg and Hillsborough late in the season.

A trio of Bucs were named 2nd Team All-Conference picks as setter Marina Alonso, right side hitter Amanda Mendes, and libero Viktoria Ivanova were all selected there.

Alonso led all Suncoast Conference setters with 8.92 assists per set in conference action. She stepped on the gas late in the season, putting up three straight 30+ assist efforts, including a pair of 40 assist contests to guide FSW to a 5-1 finish to end the regular season.

Mendes averaged 2.68 kills per set in conference play, more than any other right side in the league.  Up and down results likely hurt her chances for 1st Team honors, but when she was on, she was unstoppable for the Bucs.  She recorded three double digit kill matches for the Bucs in conference action including a career high 16  against eventual conference champion Hillsborough in their first matchup.

Ivanova finished conference play averaging 3.57 digs per set for the Bucs which ranked third in the conference.  She picked up 10 or more digs three times in Suncoast tilts including a career high 20 against Hillsborough in the first round of conference play.

The Bucs five All-Conference selections were tied with Hillsborough and St. Petersburg for most in the conference.  St. Pete's Andressa Praise was named the Player of the Year, while Hillsborough's Gary Larkin was named the Coach of the Year after a Conference Championship campaign.

The Suncoast's eight 1st Team All-Conference honorees, including De Sa and Leweling, will now be considered for FCSAA All-State honors, which will be announced at the State Tournament banquet on October 31st
