FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida SouthWestern State College celebrated a huge construction milestone for Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 5).

FSW and Suncoast Credit Union brass, in addition to the FSW basketball coaches, were on hand as the first phases of the pouring of the building’s foundation got underway. FSW President Dr. Jeffrey Allbritten, FSW Athletic Director Carl McAloose, FSW Vice President of Institutional Advancement Lou Traina, Suncoast Credit Union CEO Tom Dorety, Suncoast Credit Union Chief Administrative Officer Gary Vien and FSW Men’s and Women’s Basketball coaches Marty Richter and Dr. Kristy Ward all marked the milestone with a permanent impression by leaving their handprints in the cement.

Soon Buccaneer fans will see concrete floors and steel walls, too, marking another significant milestone in the construction process at the corner of Summerlin Road and Cypress Lake Drive.

When complete, Suncoast Credit Union Arena will be approximately 75,000 square feet and will host the Buccaneers’ basketball and volleyball teams, and a student athletic center. The arena will seat approximately 3,300 fans and include six skyboxes, a hospitality event center, competition courts that convert into recreational courts, athletic office space, student, faculty and staff wellness, and an athletic center with a fitness pavilion, men’s and women’s locker rooms and a weight training area.

In addition, the arena will also host the annual City of Palms Classic basketball tournament beginning in Dec. 2016 and there are plans to host concerts, and local, regional and national events.
