Alonso Named FCSAA Setter of the Week

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- On the heels of a 3-0 week, Florida SouthWestern State setter Marina Alonso has been named the FCSAA Setter of the Week, the second straight week a Buc has won a weekly award in the NJCAA's top region.

Alonso had a big week for the Bucs, averaging 10.60 assists per set while helping lead FSW to wins over State College of Florida, Indian River, and Palm Beach.

Tuesday against SCF she dished out 28 assists in an FSW sweep, helping the Bucs to their first Suncoast Conference win in program history.  Friday she quarterbacked an efficient Buccaneer attack as she distributed 34 assists to seven different hitters as FSW hit .301 as a team and downed Indian River 3-0 in a key cross conference tilt.   She saved her best for last though, logging a career high 44 helpers on Saturday as FSW downed Palm Beach State 3-1 at home in Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

On the season Alonso is averaging 7.74 assists per set, which ranks in the top 10 in the FCSAA.

With Alonso's honor, the Bucs have now picked up an FCSAA weekly award in two straight weeks for the first time in program history as Viktoria Ivanova was earned Defensive Player of the Week honors last week for her efforts.

FSW is 12-6 overall and 2-2 in Suncoast Conference action on the season. They will take the court again on Thursday when they make the trip to Tampa to take on #15 Hillsborough in what has now become a key conference tilt for both sides.
