FORT MYERS, Fla.- For the first time in history Florida SouthWestern has an Academic All-American® as Softball player Owen Bowers was bestowed the honor on Monday by CoSIDA after posting a 4.00 GPA in the classroom and blasting 18 home runs and driving in 94 runs the past two years on the field.
Bowers was chosen as one of just 10 members of the 2020 Academic All-America College Division Team, spanning over 170 nominees across all two year colleges which includes the NJCAA, CCCAA, NWAC, and Canadian institutions. She is the first student-athlete in FSW history to earn the honors. A Pre-Med major, Bowers had a perfect 4.00 GPA in her two years at FSW and a 3.83 overall GPA including post-secondary classes transferred in from high school.
Equally as good on the field as in the classroom, Bowers slugged her way to a .406 batting average and 1.327 OPS the past two seasons, etching her name in a number of FSW all-time record book categories despite playing just a half a season in 2020 due to COVID-19. Her 18 home runs are second in program history while her 23 doubles and 94 RBIs both rank third. She was a 1st Team NJCAA All-American as a freshman in 2019 when she set program records with 18 doubles, 17 home runs, and 79 RBIs while leading the Bucs to a 54-3 record and a #1 National ranking throughout the season.
Bowers was one of just two FCSAA student-athletes to receive the award on either the men's or women's team, joined by Tallahassee's Genevieve Printiss.
